Sounds like what happened to me.

I discovered my compressor clutch may have engaged, but the compressor was crap. I wound up replacing it, the accumulator, and the oriface tube. Then I got the system cleaned, vacuumed, and recharged at a shop.

I gave it a quick recharge this spring and the gauge was in the correct range and the gas went right in. It was a trip to watch the temp go down as the gas went in...

Being from Mass you only need it for 3 weeks out of the year (former masshole myself)
Might try a junk yard if you really need a compressor

Not really... Try sitting in traffic at the Sagamore bridge trying to goto your cottage down in Truro (town before Provincetown).. It's pretty much the same tempature down south with the added humidy in the air

Callahan tunnel is worse, but yeah it does suck with no A/C
You might check the orifice, I've seen them get clogged up before, and it really kills the A/C

Representative Costs:

Compressor, $250
Accumulator, $110
Orifice Tube, $10-25
O-Ring Kit, $7
Labor, Free (or beer for the guy that does it for you...)
To the shop for clean, vacuum, recharge...$140 when I got it done

It wasn't much harder than changing a starter.

If it helps when I bought the car the A/C didn't work, and I told them recharge it or whatever before I pick it up. But I have no idea what the guy did, but it worked when I picked it up and thought nothing of it. and It worked all summer I checked it out of curiosity on a "hot" day this year and it didn't work

You might have a slow leak in a hose or fitting, if it worked when it was recharged, you could have a shop leak check it, then if they find one, have tham pull all the r134a out, and you could fix it yourself, then bring it back and have them vacumm and recharge the system

R134a boils at -26 degrees C, (-14.8 degrees Fahrenheit) so you won't see liquid
coming out. You'll read approximately 120 psi on the gauge as long as there's even a bit of gas left. The pressure will drop on the low side only when the compressor is working.

Sounds like it. You could verify it with a jumper wire. Take the belt off, jumper 12 volts to the clutch lead and turn the pulley by hand. If there's little or no resistance, it's done.
