Question Tail lights melted!!!

Yep. Like the title says. My tail lights, right where the main stop bulb is. There not melted completely, but caved in towards the bulb! WTF? I walked out to my car to get in and notice it. It literaly happened over night or something. What can cause this? How much is thing going to cost me to replace...both of them.

I've heard of this happening to people who use taillight blackout covers.

Camaro taillamp assembly (97-02), LH = 5977791
Camaro taillamp assembly (97-02), RH = 5977792

For new ones, the GM list price is about $160 each, some dealerships sell them for below list.

I got a pair for 30 dollars via Ebay. My car was like that and everyone I know has had that problem. A guy with a 1999 SS and another with a 2002 v6 both had that. Many people I have seen in town, same thing.

I would suggest going ebay. Even if you get a bad pair the first time around it is still cheaper to get two ebay pairs than go to the dealer plus they don't look too new.

Same thing happened to mine and I have never used blackouts. I found one for 25 bucks and so far it has not melted like the first one. Maybe the original owner of my car had balckouts but I put a good 5k miles on before it started to melt.

I dunno. I've owned two Camaros (LS1s) and looked at dozens more, and only once did I ever see one with the dimpled taillights, but that car did in fact have blackouts that caused it.

Never seen that before or since.....

Maybe it has something to do with living in an ultra hot climate. Or maybe prior owners have replaced the bulbs with the wrong wattage and you're not even aware of it?

Both mine and my brothers SS tail lights are just starting to cave in. Not sure if its normal but most Camaros I've seen are the same way.

LOL I wish I could. But being stationed in Yuma, doenst help. I noticed that your from Phoenix.

Thanks for the help guys. I have never run black outs and the previous owner didnt run black outs. Plus I have had the car for over 2yrs now and it literally happend one day. I went to the bank, went in the back to get my wallet from my bag, came out and Wham, they were melted? Who knows, it was 115+ that day. I do wish I could just through blackouts on, but if there not factory 5-O gets pretty ticked off around here.

Thats correct. I bought mine with blackouts and when I removed them, I noticed the plastic wash dished. Not noticeable unless I look for it, so as far as I am concerned its not a problem.....yet.

I never ran blackouts either and I was using the correct bulb and mine still got a big dimple in it. I replaced the lens and mine has been fine for 6+ months now.

Same here, was on when I bought the car. Mine was a florida car with blackouts.

The dimples look so symmetrical on each tail light I thought thats how they are supposed to be, so im not worried about it.
