Pull the carpet back and see if you can figure out where it's coming from, check around the firewall area and weatherstripping too - use a garden hose if necessary. If it smelled really bad doubt it happened overnight and just a 20 min drive, could be something that's been going on for a while.

If your carpet is soaked...
Pull it out. Period. It won't dry out inside the car. Yes, it's a pain in the ***. But it's what you MUST do to dry your carpet out.
My 98Z leaked at the rear hatch weatherstrip. A little bit of gooey gasket sealant held the weatherstrip in place, and applied judiciously, no more leaks. Yours sounds more severe. But if you want to save your carpet and padding material, pull it now (and stick your seats back in while it drys - yeah, ghetto looking, but hey, it's either that or reek of mold and mildew).
Who knows, you could have a missing drain plug in the floor pan or something. Won't know until you pull the carpet, and then test the car for leaks.

Come on Who....you absolutely have to pull that carpet out. Its an easy job to get it out....yes, a pain in the butt, but you are in for bigger problems down the road if you dont.
Pull your seats, the console, and the trim pieces holding the carpet around the doors. Take your time and you will be fine.....and its a whole lot cheaper than buying a new car.

pull your cowl panel between the windshield and the hood. The black plastic piece see if there is anything blocking the drain holes under there first. Just test it with a water hose have someone set in the car with a light and try to pin point it..

If your car is loosing water from the cooling system it might be the heater core. That happened in my 95 eclipse GST. Water all over the passenger side that I couldn't tell where it was coming from and a weird smell. I tried to pull the whole unit out, but couldn't get the dash out after 14 hours of working on it, so I just bypassed it. I split the input and output to the core and then used a double male pipe connector to connect them, that only took ten minutes.

Check the grommet for the hood release cable where it goes thru the firewall. That was where mine was leaking. The grommet was popped out of the firewall and I just popped it back in to fix the leak.
