Default clunking from rear.

Hey guys, I have a 2001 TA and recently i've been getting a "clunking" from the rear when I start moving after I stop. As I let up on the clutch it usually clunks, (not the same as y pipe banging at all) twice in a row within a second or two and then it's fine. Anyone know if this is a tell tale sign of anything or just tranmission noise?

Lose Universal joints in the driveshaft or takeup in the diff?
Roll underneath the car safely supported and check the U joints.

You could get someone to stand beside the car while you ease off and see if they can pinpoint the noise too.

I am gettin the exact same thing. As I take off from a stop or back up I am getting a clunk from the rear too. I checked my U-joints and they dont seem bad. Atleast not enough to cause this noise. Could it be my lower control arms? The bushings on them dont seem to be the best anymore?

Seems to be a common problem. I have it too.... have not diagnosed it yet.

does the clunk happen when you go over speed bumps?

I had the "clunk" from the rear, did some search and founf out the the bushings in the stock LCA's were bad on the passenger side. I swapped them with aftermarket LCA's and problem went away. I took it to the dealership when it was under warrenty and they could find nothing.

are you talking about when you just touch the throttle? i have an A4 and sometimes i get a clunk. it's funny, it will sometimes do it when i give it medium-light throttle. it won't do it when i barely touch the throttle or if i hit the throttle hard (maybe i just can't hear it then?). i always assumed it was the worm gears in the differential or something. i don't know. hmm...should i be concerned?

I live on a hill, so when I pull out of the drive-way im facing up-hill, as soon as I hit the gas (light or hard) it clunks, then Im still going up-hill when it goes to 2nd , it clunks then too. Other than that its only from a dead stop. Its driving me CRAZY!!!! It has been doing this for a good 3 months, and I thing it's getting worse! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
