Default GM Says $550 for this..Thoughts?

hey guys,

my girlfriends 1999 3.8 camaro (130,000 miles) has been getting terrible gas mileage for a while now and its only getting worse. So we decided to take it to get checked out at a Gm dealership. Take in mind she has been throwing the EGR bank 2 code for weeks now. Ok, here is the good stuff: so we get a call today from them saying that here cars EGR valve is Stuck open and caused lots of carbon to build up in the intake, pistons, etc.. and that her fuel system needs to me cleaned. Here is there process..1) replace EGR Valve $300 before labor cost, 2) Clean out here engine, taking a machine and cleaning out the carbon build-up out????.. Here is my question. Can we replace the EGR valve ourselves with a part from autozone(138 bucks) and sea-foam the engine or will that not be enough? what are your thought?

Wow....they call it the "stealership" for a reason. $300 for an EGR valve??
Replace the valve yourself and seafoam it.

"EGR bank 2 code" Not familiar with the V6's but doesn't sound right, maybe 02 code? What was the actual code #?

yes it threw EGR bank 2 code...I had no idea what that meant either, but apparantelty my valve was stuck open.. i just dont see a difference if i just seafoam the car myself than pay someone 300 bucks to do it theirselves....

hell, for the EGR valve, I just took mine off, and pushed it in and out a few times with a pencil eraser, and it worked for another year or so (until I replaced the motor). Then just sea foam it.

That really doesn't sound right to me either. Before you go throwing parts at the car, you may want to check it with a simple OBDII code reader yourself.

Granted their carbon cleaning is probably a bit more effective than seafoam, save yourself the $500 and do it yourself. It's a learning experience, and I'm sure the car needs it anyway.

I just about looked everywhere and had no luck finding it. I finally made a little drive to O'Reilly and they had it.

could you possibly delete the EGR altogether? i used my headers as an excuse to get rid of it because i had EGR problems with my last car, and since it is nothing but junk, i threw it all out and plugged the hole in the intake...dont know about on a v6 though....

that was a thought, but I think the V6 system is diff. then on our cars.it can be deleted through the tune but the actual hardware will be on there. we just replaced to valve and are sea-foaming tommorow!! should be fun!
