Default Grinding noise when shifting

I've noticed lately that in my automatic Trans Am, when I shift into reverse or drive, the car hesitates for a moment then does a bit of a lurch accompanied by a grinding noise. The noise sounds like its coming from the rear and the best way I can describe it is like rubbing two pieces of metal together with sand in between them - if that makes sense.

What could this be?

it's never going to be perfectly smooth when you put it in drive or reverse. It is going to lurch a bit.

Only thing in the rear is the differential right?

I don't think a torque converter would grind, but that's not in the back.
