Default How exactly do you fix the burning oil?

hey guys,

How do you fix this irritating oil burning? It just doesn't make sense, there is absolutely no oil leaking whatsoever, there is no engine light on, and HELL I can still burn a **** load of rubber going into 2nd (seriously) so what the hell could it be?

I have made a post about this particular subject before, and someone mentioned something about oil in the intake, and one just needs to change to a different grade oil. What oil would that be, and wouldn't that be bad on the engine, being that GM says only use 10w-30 or 5w-30?

just totally confused

thanks, James

German castrol syntec 0w30.

I went from 1 quart = 700 miles to almost no consumption...

How many miles on the car? I'd go to Castrol Syntec (German made) 0-30 first. Our cars love it. Use the larger filter on it, and run 6 quarts. You can find it at Autozone stores. Be sure it is the GERMAN MADE Syntec (red letters on back).

+1, this is the best solution. i ran my oil for nearly 4,500 miles and the level barely moved on the dipstick. it was just below the full mark whereas the oil in it previously when i bought it was further down after less than 3,000 miles.

WHAT??? You’re not going to recommend him to seafoam his car?

seafoam wouldn't help oil consumption. the oil consumption problem lies in the LS1's poorly designed PCV system. the cleanest crankcase in the world will still burn oil if you're running an oil unfit for the engine (enter mobil 1 30W series oils). even the best oils in the world will burn a bit. all we can do to minimize the oil consumption is use a quality oil like GC 0W-30. you can do an LS6 oil system swap, breathers...go nuts, but often they don't work either and IMO not worth the trouble.

I have 45k miles on the car currently. So I just dump in 6 quarts of German Castrol 0w-30 and that will fix the problem? Is this oil synthetic, because thats what i have been running previously. I just don't want to mess anything up, thanks for the info guys

You need to use the larger filter if you want to run 6 full quarts, but yes, the GC 0-30 will help your consumption issue.

What exactly is the larger filter, just don't want to get one that doesn't fit....could I just keep the regular oil filters if i just use 5 1/2 Qts of oil? or is there a reason why you have to had the other 1/2?

I thought you could run 6-6.5qts even with the standard filter, because of how high the crank is. I remember reading that somewhere.

Not true - I run 6 quarts with a standard filter all the time. The autocross boys routinely run 6.5 quarts, and the vette guys can even go 7+.

your going to lose oil in alot of ways, like you've heard, your going to lose some through the intake....you can actually take the manifold off and see oil residue on the valve intakes....your also going to lose it because of simple break down and burn...so yes a change in oil will help a little bit.

take that water out of your engine. i wouldn't run a 30W mobil 1 of it was free. it's closer to a 20W. it's more like a 0W-20. if you did an oil analysis, you'd never use a mobil 1 30W again on an LS1. the only mobil 1 i'd run in an LS1 is a 0W-40 or 5W-40, never a 30W. it's too thin - it's responsible for much of the infamous LS1 tick and oil burn. you'll find most people with consumption and ticking issues run a mobil 1 30W.

GC 0W-30 will definitely help the consumption issue. i guarantee it'll lessen it. it may even go away. the GC 0W-30 is a near 40W. the GC 0W-30 and mobil 1 0W-40 are very similar in viscosity. the difference is, GC 0W-30 has a more exotic base oil and superior cleaning and protection properties.

Let me rephrase my comment..."I" run a larger Wix filter, on the advice of a 30 year ASE certified GM guy...a larger filter has better filtering capacity. I don't autocross, either.

I know it just seems that no matter what thread I'm in you’re always telling people to seafoam their car or use GC 0W-30.

hey, i stand by my opinions

i recommend mobil 1 0W-40 also but only to those who refuse to look for GC 0W-30.

Doesn't have to have red letters on the back

Thanks for the great information guys, but what exactly is this "bigger filter" that I need to get? because I know the dumbass store operators won't know anything other then what their computers tell them.
