Unhappy Car overheating: Any damage?

Driving home this evening when the temp gauge shot up to 260. Idle dropped down to about 300 to 400 rpms and no power. Limped to a store about 1 mile away. Checked under hood and found coolant on engine and around water pump. Not alot of coolant just some spray. Nothing dripping on the ground after car was shut off. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then started it again just to see if the idle would return to normal, it did.

Beside checking the oil for water, what other signs of damage should I look for?

TIA

Sounds like you need a water pump at least.

Best to get that fixed first. Then start it up and see if anything else is toast.

flush the system, get a new stat, and a new water pump....this should solve the problem while taking care of all the heating issues...where on the engine was the coolant?....you might have a broken head gasket as well

The coolant looked like it came from around the water pump. I think I shut it down in time to avoid any more damage. No water in oil. No oil in water. I am pretty sure the thermostat did not open and that is was messed up the water pump.

Hopfully, still have to order the water pump. If there are problems, then LS2 here I come.

Why does this stuff have to happen around the holidays??????
Of course I told the wife I might have to get a new motor due to the overheating.
