Default TA Cover Install ? Much Fluid..

First of all..Merry Christmas to all my LS1 peeps...

Ok...

I just installed my TA Diff. Cover and emptied 3 quarts into the thing...and it never spilled out.

Most guides say it will only take 2 and bit..now the car WAS up on stands, nose down.... could I have over filled

If so, is the only draw back will be some weeping from the over fill..correct?

Thanks

And again

Merry Christmas to all of you

Did you fill it from the factory fill plug, that's what I use? 3 quarts w/o spilling out sounds like too much to me????

I think the top fill plug is more for convenience than correct measurement. See the writeup at installuniversity.com

use the fill on the side of the diff, not the cover. It's almost exactly 2 qts

Yes, that's it - use a 3/8" ratchet extension.

Remove the plug on the passenger's side (3/8") and let it drain. It will go down to about 2 quarts, give or take. If you run it with too much fluid, you run the risk of blowing out your axle seals.
Hope this helps.

Ok...let me first prefaces this with this...I know nothing....

But..why would the seals blow out if there's a vent plug at the top of the housing.

Why w/n the fluid expand into that void then out the vent? Why would teh system get that pressurized..

Again..I know nothing..and tomorrow Ill go out and drain my system

dude, if you can crawl under the back of the car while it is on the ground or level and remove the drain plug on the pass side of the diff (be prepared ot have about a quart come out lol) if you do thayt you will be fine.

also i didnt think too much diff fluid was bad!
my cousin accidentally filled a diff thought the vent tube until it came out the vent tube and he drove that think for like 35,000 mi and when he checked the fluid/ diff the diff was fine and the fluid still looked new.

im guessing that the bottom of the filler plug openeing in the side of the pumpkin is about the same height as the bottom of the axle and bottom of the pinion. So that when you fill the rear fluid up to the bottom of that filler plug hole the fluid is about just touching the bottom of the axles and pinion lubricating the axle bearings at the end of the axle tubes and teh pinion bearings yet not being so high that if the axle seals or pinion start to where away they will leak extensivley. If the axle seals and pinion seal are in good condition I dont see slightly overfilling it to be a problem, however if the axle seals and pinion seal are worn and not tight and its over filled i could see extensive leakage being a problem. So if its over filled and al three seals are new, i dont see there being a problem, the vent is there to release pressure no matter what the level of fluid so I cant see there being any pressure building up which would cause seals to blow out, i reccommend filling it to the plug in teh pumpkin as has been said, it was probably engineered to be in the most optimal location from the factory as thats where GM wants you filling it to when the car is level, I would trust that hole location more than I would the covers.

Have you given any thought that you may have diluted the GM anti-slip additive by overfilling it?
