Default Gas gauge/tank problem

My gauge reads full constantly and it won't let me put any more gas in the tank, when I know its not even half full. Just starting doing this last night. Tank was on empty and tried to fill up and it started pumping it really slow, then started clicking off every few cents then finally spilled over. Any ideas? Any help is appreciated...need to get this resolved as quickly as possible.

Sounds like the tanks flapper valve is stuck closed.

Try taking a wire coat hanger and gently pushing it down thru the filler opening and see if you can dislodge the flapper valve.

Just tried the coat hanger...it didn't feel like it caught anywhere..nor did it feel like anything was blocking it. Turned the car on and it still read full. Any other ideas?

Yeah I saw that. No one seems to have an explanation.

Update: My needle finally went down to 3/4th's a tank. I guess the coat hanger worked? Put some more gas in and it didn't click at all until I put about 3 gallons in. Saw it read full on the gauge. I'm still not convinced its got a full tank though from only putting in about half a tank and riding around on it for a day. And then only putting in about 3 gallons. So really it should be reading about half or a little over. Maybe the float is going bad or something? I have no idea....maybe my gauge went down faster then what the tank was really at? I have started using 6th gear alot more now..maybe a factor?... I have no idea what's going on and its pissing me off. I wish the damn tank was see thru so I could just look at it and see how much is in it..

I don't know. How do you check that? Pretty new to all this stuff...
