Default leaking something. how can I tell what it is?

The leak is over by the engine, so im afraid it might be oil, but the car hasn't been leaking in the past, and it just started to. any ideas on how i can determine what im leaking?

Just put a little on your finger. Does it feel like oil?
Take a sniff. Trans fluid and antifreeze have unique smells. If it has neither smell, but feels like oil, it most likely is.
Sounds silly, but it works.

Put some paper or cardboard underneath your car and see what color it is. Or the smell and feel thing works too.

there's probably a warning label somewhere on this earth about tasting fluids that leak from your vehicle I would hate to see someone win a Darwin award for advice they received on here therefor I'm with the cardboard under the car idea... Any clue what area your leak is coming from?
