Thumbs down How do you know you really getting 91+ gas?

I've been thinking about this for a while now. I recently filled up at a smaller citgo in vegas and 5min into driving my SES light came on. So I drove home (bout 200miles) filled up again drove home and by the time I had gotten home the ses light was off. Could it have been they fvcked me and really sold me 87 or 89?

The car wasn't considerably slower but you could tell. No noticeable pinging either?

was your gas cap on tight between fillups? that will throw the ses light.

Could've been a lot of things, did you read the code? I refuse to buy Hugo Chavez gas.

Our cars have no way to tell the difference in 87/89/91/93. There is no octane sensor in the system anywhere.

Like was said, pull the code. If you leave the cap off or loose it will trigger a code. Otherwise if you want to test the gas check around the state uses a testing strip to give them a round about idea of the gas's octane rating when they do the suprise inspections of gas stations tanks.

The gas cap not being put on right is the most likely cause of the SES light. You can get a code reader and check the code, will probably be 'Evap system' which is because of the gas cap. This was a common problem on my '01 V-6.

As for grades of gas, you can buy 3 grades at the pump but they only truck in and produce 2 grades, regular and premium. The middle 'plus' grade is either mixed in the tank by the tanker truck or if the station has new equipment the pump pulls the proper ratio and mixes it right at the pump.
