Default tranny fluid.

When getting the the tranny fluid exchanged, is it necessaru to use synthetic?

Where do you guys usually go to have this done? And about how much does it cost?

For a 4L60E?

I would not recommend synthetic. Use regular Dextron III.

You can go to a shop to have the trans fluid fully flushed (about $50-100), or you can drop the pan and change the filter yourself, but that will only drain 4-5 quarts of fluid, which is less than half the total fluid capacity. But if you drop the pan often, then a full flush probably isn't necessary.

ok. Thank you. What about the differential fluid and transaxle. Isn't dexcool the coolant?

No transaxle in your F-body.

Dexcool is the factory recommended coolant.

Diff fluid had different factory recommendations depending on year. Recommended for '98 is conventional 80w90 with GM limited slip additive. For '99+ is synthetic 75w90 with GM limited slip additive.

Why don't you recommend synthetic? As long as the bottle state is compatable with Dextron III, why wouldn't it be ok to run? I run synthetic in my car for oil, tranny, and differential, and after what happened to this old 80's something pickup we had I won't go back to dino oil. Unless I have to for a breakin period.

When I bought my FLT (then FLP) Level IV trans, Chuck of www.finishlinetrans.com specifically told me not to use synthetic in a built or stock 4L60E.

IMO, Chuck is one of the best 4L60E builders in the country. I'll stick with his recommendation.

Synthetic is too slippery, not recommended for the 4L60E.

I've used synthetic in a couple GM cars and they never shifted correctly. But once I used the regular dextron fluid all was good again.
