Default Newbie Brake????

I just messed up. I was painting my calipers and took both sides out of the rears out. One brake pad surface is longer, one is shorter and has squeler. Which goes towards car which towards tire? I'm thinking long toward car and squealer toward tire but want to double check. Thanks.

P.S. Next time remember don't do both sides at the same time.

98-02 style:

What you acn also do is look at the back of the pads. One will have a circular wear mark from the piston, the other will have the fork marks from the caliper.

As a word of caution to all: When you do your brakes (on either axle) do one side at a time. This allows you to have a frame of reference when you go to reassemble each side. It works for every car and motorcycle you will ever work on.

13 looks like the squeler. So it would be towards the frame. I'll double check the marks.

I won't buy any new vehicle with drum brakes. Too much of a PITA to work on. Disk brakes not only work better, they are much easier to maintain.

Yeah, that was one of the first things I changed on my car, swapped out the rear drums for LT1 rear discs.
