replace cat or get rid of it?
I talked to a few people and my car looks like it has a bad cat. I called the GM dealer and they said it would be covered under warranty but I have to pay $85.50 to have them diagnose it. Im thinking about calling a few exhaust shops and seeing if they can just take it out and weld a pipe in its place since it will probably be close to the same price.
Will an exhaust shop even perform that type of replacement?
Are there any noticible changes to the car if I do decide to take the cat out?
I live in Florida so right now they're arent emissions testing.

Most shops won't do it because it is a federal offense and they can be heavily fined for performing that type of work. You shouldn't have to pay anything for them to do any warranty work. Just take it to another dealer in the area for the cat replacement. Try a GMC pontiac center. My local pontiac dealer is way better when it comes to customer service and satisfaction than the chevy dealer. It's the same damn car as the trans am so they should do it.

I had mine replaced by my pontiac dealer. They fixed it for free, diagnosis and all. I would NOT pay 85.80 for them to diagnose the problem, find a Pontiac dealer or another Chevy dealer that will check it for free.

Dealers always tell you there's a diagnostic fee when you talk to them. I know people that have had a cat replaced under the original federal emissions 8yr/80K warranty and weren't charged anything after being told the same thing over the phone. If it's indeed a bad cat there shouldn't be any charge, if they do just contact GM customer service. Is it throwing a post cat code?
