Default A "moaning/humming" sound when I turn my wheels?

I am getting what I would describe as a moaning sound when I turn my steering wheel if the car isn't moving. It's most noticable when turning the steering wheel to the right, but also a bit when turning it to the left.

I checked my power steering fluid and it's good to go. Any ideas what's causing this sound? I don't mind the sound, but if it's a warning that something is wearing out and someday I won't be able to turn lol, I think it's something I need to look into.

Could be your power steering pump crying because you're trying to turn your tires without moving. You should never do that.

Well, it never used to do it. It's only been happening for about a month or so. As my friend noted when he first heard it, "hmm, that sounds strange."

And I don't turn my wheels at a standstill normally, I was just doing it to reproduce the noise in an attempt to locate the problem. It also happens, though not as loudly, making slow moving turns such as backing out of my driveway. (which is how I noticed it first)

Well this is also a problem if you have a fat chick in the car. And yes if she's in the passenger seat it causes the groan worse when turning to the right do to the caster angle (:

No ideas? My friend suggests it may be the rack and pinion or the power steering pump going bad.

Any way to narrow this down short of taking it into the dealer?

Just because the fluid is full doesn't mean that it isn't bad. Is it harder to turn? Is there play in the wheel? Any leaks?

None of the above that I'm aware of. I guess I could change the fluid anyway. That'd be the first inexpensive step to take I suppose.

your pump could be startin to take a crap-when you add a load on the pump at low rpms it can make some noise

^^^^ Your PS pump is probably starting to go, but it could be a while before it does
I would just drive it until it goes completely
