car wont go into park.....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
its a 1997 trans am with an automatic transmission and it wont go into park... and i dont want my friend to buy it unless its somthin simple to fix....
when the car is off, ignition on the car only goes into neutral and drive but not reverse or park
when the car is on it will go through everything except park
and when the car is off completley with the key in and in acc. not on it wont go into reverse or park
ive checked for binding with the linkage and there is nothing in the way stoping it from going forward... my guess is the lock out mechacinism for park and reverse while the car is driving is stuck... some sort of way or somthing or the tranny is just screwed up
any ideas?!?! thanks !

I don't want to sound like an ***, but your foot is on the brake right? Do the brake lights light up when you press the pedal? If they don't, then it could be an issue with the switch.

Yea, a friend that had a jetta had the sensor on the brake pedal go out. The car stopped normal but since it wasnt reading that the brake was pushed in it wouldnt let him shift into park.

A fuse is part of that circuit also, and is required for that switch to function. If the fuse is bad, the brake lights won't work, and you'll have problems shifting out of, or in your case in to park.
