Default Fuel Gauge problem

A few days ago, my fuel gauge started acting screwy, if I would just put 5 dollars worth of gas in my car, it would go all the way up past full and stay there for awhile, then it will drop straight to 3/4s tank then back to past full. Any ideas on what is goin on?

My gauge can act up sometimes as well, but not as bad as what you're describing. When I asked about it most of the replies seemed to indicate the gauge itself is probably the culprit. Have you tried tapping on the gauge cluster to see if it moves?
