Exclamation Headlight Question...not sure if it is the gears or motor

I searched around some but couldn't find anyone asking this question so here goes.

I turned the headlights on, the lights came on but they didn't pop up so I manually flipped them up. Then with the switch I turned them off and back on and they worked perfectly. The car has 105k miles, it has only happened twice just recently after my car sat for 30 days since my license was suspended.

I couldn't hear any noises but the engine was running which is very loud so I'll check tonight with the engine off. Any idea if the motors are going bad or are the gears becoming stripped?

Thanks for any help.

Mark

Hey Mark,... Are they both doing it or just one?

Need to know that. I'd also say a possible relay issue. The on-off-on, could just trip it back into working. If so, then the relay is going bad, and you might as well replace it. Or to check, swap another relay for it, like the Starter Relay. They both should be the same, and in the black box under the hood, drivers side. Rectangular shape. I think it even says FUSE BOX on it. Cover is held down by a bolt.

If just 1, then I'd say the motor is going out, and manually bringing it up un-stuck it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies, both times it occured it was both headlights.

I'll try swapping another fuse sometimes this week hopefully to see if that works.

My right headlight wouldn't come up every once in a while, then it got down to every day, then after sitting for an hour. I'd have to manually turn it and then it would work. I took off the motor and opened it up. There was carbon built up that was messing up the electrical connection inside. So I just sanded up the stator and metal brushes a little and put it back together. Good as new.
