Default I'm REALLY sorry to ask this BUT!

I kno ive made previous threads about my very loud fuel pump, well i figured i needed a new one, but for some reason, never got around to buying one. So it keeps starting, and i keep driving. Im going to say its been going on around 5-6 months, of an extremely loud fuel pump, but no signs of anything else. Do you really think it is bad at all? Or just something extremely odd that makes it humm very loud?

fuel pumps are designed to be quiet. if your's is making noise it is likely going to need to be replaced. your decision is whether or not you will put it off until it fails on the highway and you have to have it towed to a mechanic.

i would go ahead and have it fixed because i could be wrong here but if it is worn out and cant deliver enough fuel wont you run lean and damage your engine possibly

Yup, been there. The fuel pump and 2 injectors failed on my '94 LT1 Z28, and it ended up blowing the #7 piston into the heads. Was great fun... My pump wasn't making any noises - just failed all at once.

I'm sure my example is a bit extreme, but if I were you, I'd fix this thing before more damage occurs.

OK someone educate me on the running lean thing - How can not having fuel in a cylinder to fire (or not very much) cause it to blow a piston? I mean, less/no fuel means less/no boom on ignition so less force on the piston, right?

The proper mixture of fuel/air in the combustion cylce is very important. With too much Air and not enough fuel, whats called 'detonation' will more than likely occour. This is very harmful to engine componets (ie, Rings,Valves and Pistons) When the fuel to air ratio is higher on the air side the combustion is very hot and very erratic. This very commonly results in melting a piston or valve. Hope this helps! I know there's a little more too it but this should give ya some idea!

My fuel pump started to "whine" this past summer only on hot days with alot of driving. Since then it does it very rarely and I have not changed it yet. I hope it is not hurting any performance. I just went to Dallas this weekend and I did hear it whine when sitting in traffic getting out of Houston but it then stopped once I was at 70+.

I know I bought an older Nissan before and the car was very sluggish, replaced the pump and it ran like I had put a 100 shot on it!

When you run lean your running much hotter and it will melt your cylinders. Anyways if your pump is whining you should fix it. If you want to cut up your car you can do it yourself without dropping the tank.

Have you changed the filter. When i bought my GN the fuel pump was loud like that and the guy said he thought it as going out. I changed the fuel filter and the thing was quiet the rest of the time I owned it.

The motorcycle dealership I used to work at had a 98 GMC sierra for a shop truck with about 120K miles on it. I worked there for 3 years, putting about 10k miles on it myself. The fuel pump was louder than the engine, and it was properly maintained. I'm just saying, it might not go out tomorrow. It's gonna go eventually so you might look into replacing it sooner than later, but it doesn't necessarily mean its crapping out as we speak.

please change the filter!!! that will definantly cause it to be loud!! if its not that then there is something causing your pump to work harder then it should! something broken in the pump maybe??

My fuel pump is loud and it's probably only a few months old. The guy I bought the car from replaced it not too long before I bought it.

For the most part fuel pumps are not to be heard ( there are a few exceptions) a whinning fuel pump bascily means it is working to hard or is getting to much eltrical power and is over working and well burn out and leave you on the side of the road best to bite the bullet and replace it and if it still makes noise to put a restor in line to reduce the juice getting to it.

Mine's not loud on my GTO and the pump is right in the trunk. The only time I hear mine is if I'm uploading a new tune, the pump fires up for a couple seconds at the end of the tuning process and since the car is not running at the time I can hear it.
