Default Gear Shift Slider

The gear shift slider on my '98 T/A A4 car is the retracatble or telescoping type. Sometimes, but not always it does not slide correctly and will leave a gap when moving shifter from park to drive. Why is this, and what can I do to get it to slide or open up right??
Thanks.

I haven't run into this problem, but I would try cleaning it.

Remove the plate scrub it with some dilluted simple green or similar. Then dry it off good and lube that area with silicon. While you have it off, a visual inspection may also reveal where the problem is.

Okay, I will try that. I just thought it was strange that it wouldn't do it all the time, so hopefully just a cleaning will work.
Thanks.

You could replace it with a leather shift boot.

I think it was $25-$30, but you can get it cheaper if you look around. We have a new sponsor (RedlineGoods) that is making some nice ones (and custom too if you want).
