Default Gas mileage

Well since I've had my '95 Formula, the gas gauge decides that one minute that it'll be at like 3/4, then below 1/4, and back up again. I understand that gas is a liquid and will sway with the car, but should it be making jumps like that? Also, a bunch of my friends and myself went on a good length cruise, the other night. Some of the more modified of cars only used about 1/8 tank, mine used a little more, and mine is bone-stock (for now). I don't want to start guessing and just replace stuff that doesn't need it...any suggestions? It has never had a tune-up, the car has 110k miles, yes I'm going to replace the plugs and wires (before you ask lol).

Fuel sender is bad. ANd you can't compare milegae based off "they used 1/8 of a tank." That's like measuring time with the sun.

Bc the damn gauge isn't too accurate to begin with the first half tank seems like it last forever then after that it is like it is only getting 2 mpg. Been like that with F-bodies for years my 87 TA did the same thing. Only way to gauge MPG without putting in extra gauges and meters is to fill up, drive, then fill back up and see how far you got.

Every LT1 car I ever seen once it gets to 1/4 will dip to E then back up past 1/4. The old school fuel floater is not the best. In the ls1's they are a lot better. Also most chevys for the 90's will sit on 3/4 to full for ever then after that it just goes down super quick there not the most accuracte of car gagues.

so i don't suppose, without replacing the whole sending unit, which is expensive, there's a way to fix it?...
