metal in oil
my car took a **** today and it turns out it seems to have a broken lifter and rod barring from what a few shops have told me, heres the thing. they both said that rebuilding the ls1 would be a bad idea, that i'd be better off looking for a different motor. everyone's 2 cents are welcome for advice

do it youself and save!!! it would be alot easier if u pulled the motor out the car, then remove the heads and remove the lifter and then take out the bottom end and replace the rod bearings

It all depends on what you want to spend, how much experience you have working on engines, etc.
I recently hunted down a decent LS1 for a car I bought that didn't have an engine. I think if you already have one it would be cheaper to rebuild than to buy used. Plus you don't know whats going to fail in the used one. Rebuild one yourself and you'll know whats in it.

Im leaning to rebuilding it. The shops that looked at it said that this motor really cant be rebuild cause its an alluminum block. bull right? and what all should be replaced since its gonna get opened up as far as what needs to be replaced , just whats broken or ....

on another thread someone said that if i had alum shavings in the oil that it was gonna be a spun bearing... gonna try and check it out tomorrow... should the rest of the motors still be good that way only the bearings get replaced.... just for the record im new to ls1 and dont have to much exp with internals so forgive me if i say something stupid

When I lost my oil pump I didnt catch it in time and the second I saw I had zero oil pressure I shut it off immeditely and had it towed home, checked the oil and it was full of shavings. I had the motor taken out and it spun a bearing and took out the crank, pistons, and some shavings got into the lifter so I replaced them too. Not tryin to scare ya

I do recall from what i read a while back in a magazine i think it was that the walls of the ls1 are thin so you have to be really good at rebuilding to rebuild the ls1. But i have also heard people rebuild the ls1 just like other motors.

Once you get the block work done and get it all home putting it back together isn't bad. Just follow some kind of guide if it's your first one.

Im planing on rebuilding it. Im thinking of taking it to a friend of mine in carlsbad nm.few hours away from where im at...the thing is that the guy who was gonna take the motor out and put it back in just got arrested a week ago... not sure but sounds like its drug charges... so I need to find a new person to take it out and drop it back in... just for the record... he was gonna charge me 300.00. My dad wants to take it out ourselves... but not too sure how hard it is, ive never taken out motors. my dad has but its been maybe 15yrs since he's done it.

It is a pretty difficult job over all. I would do it myself, but I have pulled a had full of motors on my my own(never a LS).
I also rebuilt a few engines myself in my garage.
It really depends on how much cash you have. You can, get your whole long block rebuilt. Or you can get a rebuilt long block. Of course a junk motor from a donor car(this is the least of my favorites).
Or you can reman the motor your self. It can be done, just open it all up and inspect as you go along. Things do get expensive fast when you find broken parts inside though.
Good luck.

Just a thought I have seen ls1s go on the board cheap and I just sold a complete stock one with 60,000 miles for 1400.00. Or pick up a 6.0 l thats what I have in my car bored .30 over with cam and heads. Depends is this a daily driver or going to be a drag car? Call you local salvage yards you can pick up a truck 6.0 liter for around $500 to $600 bucks and just put your inake and oil pan on and drop it in. Just a thought.
