Default Cranks FOREVER Before it Starts

Hey guys, i have a 1999 SS with 58k miles on it.

I have had it for 3 1/2 years with absolutely no problems whatsoever. Just lately it has been cranking over for a very long time before it starts, but once it starts it runs perfect, like nothing is wrong

Has anyone had this problem before, and if so can someone point me in the right direction.

I was thinking like a crank sensor possibly..?

Thanks,
Matt

What is your fuel pressure at? May be taking a while to build up pressure bc the pump is starting to fail.

that would make sense. I'm not sure i don't have a fuel pressure gauge but i can get my hands on one and check it within the next couple days.

thanks for the perspective.

Sounds like a fuel pump (or clogged filter). Turn the key on and off several times before cranking, if it helps I'd feel real strong about a fuel pressure issue.

Its time for a new fuel filter anyway, (miles/age) so you may want to skip the gauge and see what happens first. At 60-70K on my car, a new fuel filter and a carbon cleaning helped the start-up performance noticeably.

Also check your temp sending unit. My brothers was loose the other day and it did the same exact thing.

yeah im starting to think that a fuel filter is in order, among some other general maintenance items probably.

where is the temperature sending unit located? is that the unit on the water pump? That'd be a nice easy fix

I had a ignition relay that was intermittent till if finally failed. It is located in the underhood fuse box. You can exchange it with the fan relay to test it.

+1. I had the exact same symptoms on my lt1, ended up being the ignition switch. To the op, pay attention when you try and turn the key, if it feels like it binds up sometimes, or that you have to turn it further to get it to crank, might be your problem.

The ECT sensor in on the drivers side head, right by cyl #1 exhaust. Here's some other things to check: www.gearchatter.com/viewtopic8784.php

my vote goes for battery going bad... my mudstain has a battery going out and it takes forever to start... the CCA's are low...

go to vatozone and have them check the battery... could be that easy

Another vote for the ignition relay, check the prongs to see if they're black. If they are see if you can scratch some of it off and try it again. Also check your fuel pump relay. My car had a bad fuel pump relay and did the exact same thing you're describing. I scratched some of the black off of the prongs and it's been working great since. Fuel pump relay is also located in the fuse box under the hood.

well, all the relay prongs were clean as a whistle, the fuel pump primes like normal, the only thing i haven't checked, which is probably the easiest thing to do, is the fuel filter. And the battery was load tested and its fine.

One thing that i forgot to mention earlier is that the car only does this when it has sat for more than an hour or so, if i turn it off and hop right back in within an hour it starts right up, like nothing is wrong.

Sounds like mine. But my fuel filter was replaced already. Shoot the whole freakin' motor was replaced a couple months ago. Even this motor does it

I read it, but that sounds like an issue with an aftermarket pump line splitting. I have stock. Shoot the pump has never been pulled.

It's the fuel module leaking down.
Do you guys know there are these things called tools so you don't have to rely only on hands and eyeballs?
An example would be a fuel pressure gauge, you can even rent those.
