Exhuast manifolds
Yes, I've herd that also. Reason my 02 Z28 is still stock on the manifolds. Thro, I am considerin the shorties.
But if, I'm going to all the trouble of changin out the manifolds. I'd go w/ the best bang for the buck, headers.
Good luck!

They flow better because of the revised cats. the 01-02 cars, got the z06 cats which flow much better than the early cats. If you are looking for a sleeper set up, or just don't want to keep better ground clearance, don't like valve train noise coming out of the thinner wall long tubes (if you are that picky). then the 01-02 manifolds are a good bet.
I am planning this swap myself. Not looking for huge improvements, I am already low 13's consistently, just looking for 12's without giving up any my stock accouterments.

01-02 manifolds also are shaped like shorties. If you look at 98-00 manifolds, you will find 1 side is a shorty (albeit a **** poor design) and the passenger is a log style which is a horrible design but used due to space issues on that side.
