Why in the hell am I having such bad luck with this car so far? I attempted to change the oil today and first the drain plug was stripping and was a PITA. I get another and replace it. The filter was on super tight thanks to the dealer. I tried a screwdriver which made it worse. Strap wrence failed first, I went back and got the socket style and it won't grap on to the filter now that it was crushed and piereced. WTF am I suppose to do now?

looks like whoever changed the oil last didnt run a little oil on the seal on top of the filter. good luck to ya

That or the TOOL cranked down on the filter!

Don't know how mangled it is now, but I'd try wrapping one (maybe two) latex dishwashing gloves around it for grip and try the strap wrench again. Make sure the old filter seal comes off. I think K&N filters still have a large "nut" built into the bottom of their filters. Hang in there, you'll get it.

I used rags for the socket style wrench, but nothing. I can't get the strap style to work. There isn't enough room for me to tighten down and turn.

When you pierced it with a screw driver where you absolutely positive to go through the MIDDLE of the filter element? Piercing anywhere other than the middle will result in simply stripping the aluminum. Worst case scenario the filter may be cross threaded but thats a shot in the dark.

Don't think rags will work, especially since it's been pierced and oily. Try latex gloves. Large channel-lock pliers is a great idea.

You want to stab that sucker directly in the middle into the thickest part of metal you can find. I've literally ripped an oil filter to shreds till I found 'the spot' where the amount of force required to twist off the filter was LESS than the amount of force required to shred the metal. Make sense? I've never had the 'stab an turn' method fail. When putting the new one on like said earlier don't forget to prime it and lube the seal.

That'll pry make things a bit easier. I am sure by now you have nasty black puddles in the drive way, kitty litter scattered everywhere. Hell, you pry came in dirtier than dirt after fighting with the plug an filter. Trust me, we've been there. Best of luck to ya, and remember that sucker only needs to be a tad more than hand tight.

Buy yourself big a pair channel locks and you good to go.Open the jaws wide and grab the bottom of the oil filter and turn to the left.

Try the screw driver again. I have demolished a filter or two but eventually they do come off. Good luck

Try to clean it with degreaser then either use chanel locks or a damn good strap wrench.

I have mangled my share of stuck on oil filters from previous owners.


You shoud be able to get the damn thing off.


This still does not compare to my VW Beetle. I went to tighten the drain plug and it just kept on spinning. Yup, that's right it striped so bad it would not come out with anything. I had to replace the oil pan. . . . The fine engineers of VW left the threads sof aluminum. . . . Thanks. . . . Really.

take the screwdriver and hammer and just tap it right at the rim untill u get it to spin.. may take awhile but it will knock it loose, ive had this problem before

I have longtube headers and the channel lock works.Grab it from underneath.

Had this happen then crushed the **** out of the filter. I ended up wrapping a bunch of duct tape around the ****** then gripped up at the top of it with my filter wrench and it finally came loose. Now I always run the K&N filter with the hex on the bottom so I can take it off with a crecent wrench
