Default VERY loud roar/grind/horrible sound from rear

as tittle says the car (96 z28 w 130K) has a VERY loud roar when you let off the gas with the car in gear. i notice a deep vibration too but is not constant. i cant tell a whole lot about it but it seems to be coming from the rear passengers side. the rear end fluid and transmission fluid are at correct levels. it also pops/clanks in the rear when changing gears. when the gas pedal is pushed down the sound is much much much fainter and more of just a whine. its gotten really bad in the past two days and now is just unbarable. there cant bee too much back there i wouldnt think that could go bad especially being primarily on one side but i dont know much about rear ends.

From what you're describing.... sounds like you broke some teeth off your gear diff. and your bearings went out. My bearings went out at 75,000 miles and I broke teeth of the gears at 170,000 miles. The bearings made the loud whiney noise and the clatter sound resulted in broken gears due to low diff fluid from a leak I never took care off. Hope this sheds some light as to what you might be dealing with.

So it sounds like it makes more noise when NOT under load? Bet your bearings are toast.

I had something similar happen when pinion nut was loose. I also have a bad bearing right now, its just loud all the time under load or not.

yea pinion crush sleeve can be be off, but its most likely the bearings are toast. hurry and fix it before you destroy the entire rear end!
