MAF minus the screen??
A buddy of mine ported my MAF sensor for me and chucked the screen out. Is it going to be a problem not having that screen. I know the intake filter is there to catch dirt and shirt but isnt the screen a second layer of defense. If i get a leaf or something in my engine is that going to **** **** up?

If something gets past the air filter, it gets past the MAF screen. Later GM MAF's don't even come with screens. The honeycomb screen was also there to help straighten out airflow so the senor gets a good reading, but air doesn't bend from filter to intake on the LS1 so don't worry about it.

As someone who tunes LS1's on the side, I usually recommend to leave the screen in. As stated above, it's there to help with consistent, accurate readings. The MAF curve in the tune is designed around that screen being there. Take it out and you'll lean out your fueling mixture some. This will generate positive fuel trims, which will be added to full-throttle fuel calculation. With the size of the opening in the intake/throttle body, the gains aren't worth the potential issues of porting/de-screening the MAF IMO.
