Default Cat in I-pipe

Did a search and couldnt find much about it, Has anyone ever put a cat in the I pipe as a cheap alternative to reduce rasp and/or exhaust fumes/smell?
Any info is appreciated.

to me that would be pointless. Cats are tended to work with them as close to the motor as possible.

IE: to get rid of rasp and to get rid of the exhaust smell that some people hate

I believe they are close to the engine so they can be subjected to more heat, as they operate most efficiently at high temp. With all the people on here i'm looking to see if any one has tried putting one in the I pipe and what the result was. We dont need to pass inspections down here in FL so If it isnt working at 100% efficently I wouldnt care.

That was the point i was getting at like you said. Cats work better closer to the motor for when heated. But why do you want to stick it in the I pipe then?

I thought about this, but was talking to my local exhaust shop and said that the cat is prone to clog since it would be so far away from the engine.

The reason of this post was to see if anyone had done it and if it was sucessful in getting rid of rasp and or smell without buying an expensive Y pipe.

reguardless of how close to the headers the cat is it will still get rid of rasp. I dont hear any cars get less raspy once the cats are warm. But the only thing that would make me hesitate from this is restriction. Because one cat in the i pipe will cause a lot more restriction then two in the y. And if you were to get a matallic spun cat so there is almost no restriction and put it in the i, it might not get rid of rasp. I have heard of others saying the car is still raspy after having them installed in the y. maybe lose a few ponies and get a carsound cat put in the i or have two installed in the y but pay more. i would say it is your opinion. I have no idea what the power differences would be anyways.

What exhaust setup do you have now? I thought about the same thing in effort to get rid of the rasp and that annoying sound at around 2k rpm.
I got rid of my rasp with a 3.5in dynomax bullet muffler right at the merge. If you want a vid of the the sound just let me know.

I have stock manifolds and catback on the car right now, but I have some QTP's waiting to go on the car and was thinking about going with an offroad Y but it seems that the rasp is pretty bad. Just exploring some ideas before I purchase a y pipe.

It would be a bad idea. Cats work either because of exposed through area or frontal surface area, the result of either being more open area through the core. I think a single cat in the I-pipe would restrict the exhaust significantly. Even a good cat.

I just added a couple cheap $30 ebay cats to my ORY and it almost completely eliminated the rasp i was getting with my LT's/ORY/dual/dual exhaust setup.

If you are going to put something on the y-pipe why not a resonator, it will do the same thing.
