Default best shift point

what would be the best shift point for a stock ls1.. what rpm does the stock ls1 stop makeing power?

and puting on some mt's for the track, my plan was to launch at 3000 but slip the clutch, not pop it.. so my rear end will survive a bit.. any input on a good 60ft will be good.. thanks

Are you asking about a shift point or what RPM to launch at?

The stock power peaks around 5500rpm. However, shifting closer to 6K will make the RPMs be higher after the shift. So, I would say to shift around 5800.

Shift at 6k. Honestly, I don't know why you'd shift at anything else in a stock f-body. It's easy to see on the tach (even though I don't think most of us look after a while), and it's about as high as you can go without ever worrying about the limiter.

Actually the limiter kicks in at 6200. But yeah, the tach says 6000.

Just wind it out all the way, the RPM's will fall back down a little bit between gears depending on how fast of a shifter you are.

I know that, but you don't shift right off the limiter or you run the risk of hitting it before you get to shift, and losing MPH/ET. And saying shift at 6100 would be silly, who knows exactly where 6100 is? 6k is just a nice, easy number to see and use, with a decent buffer before the limiter.

If you've got a shift light, set it to 5850 or so, by the time you react, it'll be 6k. Back when I first got HPtuners and my WS6, I was logging every time I drove and I would shift at 6k, but HPtuners would show me shifting around 6100-6150 every time. I don't know if this is the supposedly laggy F-bod tach, or just the reaction time, but either way, it IS why I recommend shifting at 6k.

I'm sorry, but there's no way you can tell the difference between 5,800 and 6,000 rpm's. That falls within the tach's margin of error, anyway. Even automatic transmissions set to shift at 6,000 rpm's, don't shift at 6,000 rpm's - I've seen the shift logs range from 5,900 - 6,150 rpm's. Just shift at the 6,000 rpm mark. If you gun lower, half the time you will shift lower and you'll just bottom out the next shift. Gains have been made in automatic cars raising the shift points 100-200 rpm's because of the shift extensions. Just because the car isn't pulling any harder doesn't mean you won't go faster. You're still making more power at 6,000 rpm's than 4,200 rpm's and shifting higher will cause less "bottoming out" on the next gear.

When my car was stock I use to shift a little before 6k but then I started shifting right at 6 and I noticed no difference. So just shift at 6 it's easier to do then 5800. Our tachs are about 200rpm slow from my experience. I recently put in a shift light and it flashes way before the tach hits the shift point.
