How it's done: Headers?
So I know the quickest way to horsepower is making your engine breathe; intake, rollers, cam, exhaust, etc. I'm finally getting into modding my car and I've been looking into headers a lot lately. What I'm wondering is how most of you install your headers and keep legal with cats because I'm not finding any longtubes that allow cats, and I hear short tubes are pretty much useless. Otherwise, is it advised to just remove my cats? I understand I might have to go to an exhaust shop to get all this done. And if I do get longtubes and manage to keep cats, would it be possible or advised to stick with stock cats or go to higher flowing cats?

If you put long tubes on you wont pass emissions.... I'm not sure of any state that is legal for long tubes... you can keep cats with lt's though... You would have to buy a catted y-pipe which is more expensive so most people don't buy them... but they would have high flow cats on them.... me I have ORY... In the "Great" State of California almost anything you do to your car is illegal... if not they'll find a way to make it illegal....

Highflow cats like magnaflow, or maybe these thunderbolt cats I hear about, but not alot of info on them.
Oh and the cats go in the Y pipe, not on the headers so you can put them wherever you want.

Most companies that make longtube headers have the option of buying catted Y pipes. In my part of Ohio, cats are required. I bought a set of American Racing Headers with their catted Y pipe. They didn't do a sniffer test, just a visual inspection to see if there were cats.

What's a good header setup for the dollar? I'm getting a check at the end of the month to beef up my car with so I'm kind of on a budget. I copied the sux2bu ram air setup last night and sealed off my intake in the front, I have the airbox and bellows, and right now my exhaust is cut off right after the axle. I'm probably going for intake, cam, loudmouth, headers and y-pipe/cats, 3.73s and maybe some new rims. So I'm trying to squeeze every cent I can.

Here in Washington, emissions test standards vary BY COUNTY where you register your car. In my county there is no emissions check. So LTs & ORY legal. But in Seattle there is an emissions check. It seems to depend on population density. So check your county laws.

If I was you I would avoid the loud mouth with headers. Any cat back with a real muffler is fine for headers.
