Morning project!
Today I spent my morning changing out the valve cover gaskets due to oily residue on the outside of the valve covers. What do you guys think gasket issue?

Looks like grommets to me. If the valve cover gaskets were leaking, you would see it dripping down on and by the headers and not on top of the cover. And I hate to say it, but you can't buy just the grommet. You have to buy the bolt with the grommet from GM for about $3 a piece. You realize the pcv hose is disconnected in the 2nd pic?

9 lb ft = 108 lb in, he's ok on the torquing. These are dealer only bolts and they aren't designed to take apart and replace the grommets. Not sure where you would get just the grommet since GM only sells the 3 pieces as a unit. GM part # 12577215. A set of 8 will run you about $34 shipped from GMPartsDirect. I bet they are closerer to $8 a piece at your local dealer. Yours don't look cracked or split. You think maybe you just ran them loose for to long? I would clean them up real good and check the torque again after several 100 miles. I've got a 2000 LS1 and mine still look good. How many miles on your motor?

Oily residue on the gaskets, oil consumption and oil residue in the exhaust manifold made it clear that a change was needed. Even if it only was to eliminate a source for the oil consumption. The motor only has 103K miles and I just found out that the oil pan is leaking, Time to replace another gasket.
That is going to be a pain to change out!
