Default safe to drive a little with header gasket leak?

i have what i'm assuming is a gasket leak. sounds like a "FT-T-T-T" coming from the passenger side when i accelerate. weird thing is in neutral i can rev up to redline and get no leak whatsoever and in drive it starts at ~1500rpm.

is it safe to drive 10-15 miles if i keep the rpm's low?

My car's been like that since I installed my headers. One of the header bolts rusted off in the driver side head and I'm not pulling the head to get it out. Ofcoarse it has to be the last bolt so it is annoying. I just used it as an excuse to install an e-cutout so i can't hear it anymore. It still is annoying on long trips when I'm cruising at a constant speed and have the cutout closed.

haha i've been way too worried

it's really not dangerous? cold air isn't gonna shock the valves or anything? seems like it could lead to completely blowing the gasket or something.

it's my dd and i just can't afford for anything to go wrong. i'll probably end up checking/replacing the gasket but if i can wait a week that'd be much more convenient.

i plan on re-doing it soon. i haven't gone past 1/2 throttle in fear of blowing something up.

you're not going to blow anything up. The valves will be fine, you are not going to smack one b/c you have a little exhasut leak. Think about all the econ **** box cars out there where you can clearly hear a hole somehwere in the exhaust. Pretty much the same concept, you will be fine

minus the fact that this one is at the head/header. And if gasses can escape through the leaking spot, it also can suck in unmetered air.... But you should be fine. Just dont flog the living **** out of it. I just pulled mine because I couldnt get the passenger side to stop leaking, even double gasketing it, and all 4 cylinders on that side were leaking. Im going to put these gaskets in there and hope it stops the leaks. It says they will crush up to 50%, which SHOULD seal any imperfections in the flange/head.

yeah i was more worried about cold air hitting the hot valves and warping them. thanks for the link. i'm gonna try tightening everything up again otherwise those are lookin pretty good.

why would it only leak in drive though? just because there's load?

yes, because there is load on the engine. Its probably leaking in park also, its just not as pronounced because there is no load on the engine.

isn't that stuff not good for places where it makes contact with gas/oil though?

Decent sized header leaks can make your car fee like a dog. I would definitely get that exhaust leak fixed before you put it on the dyno. It would suck if you pay $150 just to blow the gasket or get poor numbers because of a little $15 gasket and about 30 minutes of work.

Well after reading this thread and having a day off from work and school I decided to go and fix my header leak. I went out and bought brand new felpro gaskets and some copper rtv that's good until 700 degrees and says it wont mess with oxygen sensors. I'll post back tomorrow after everything is cured and let you know how I made out. Hopefully my tick will be gone. Also, I finally decided to take the coil packs off and boy what a breeze headers would have been the first time around if I had decided to do that originally, you can reach all of the bolts real easily.

^ i couldn't find the last bolt to get the coil pack off! hahah. so much crap back there i couldn't see it. my passenger side is the bad one which makes it even worse. can anyone post a pic of where all the bolts for the coil pack are?

and i'm gonna unbolt everything and pull the gasket out to see if there's anything wrong with it. may have just not had everything tight enough.

A lot of people leave the back bolts off for the coil packs b/c they are hard to reach.
