Exhaust experts, try this one...
I have Dynomax bullet in the I-pipe for rasp issues which dumps into a dynomax Ultra-Flo muffler. I realize that most every component of the system can and does affect the sound of the exhaust but here's my question. I am growing to dislike the stock SS tips that came on my car, which is a 1999. If I wanted to richen (deepen) the tone of the exhaust at idle, what can be done with the tips to achieve this? Smaller diameter? Larger diameter? Stainless all the way from the muffler? Shoot me some ideas. TIA!

Tips won't make a real difference in the sound unless they are a really wide diameter. What kind of headers and such are on your car? It may also be the muffler that is keeping it from having a deep tone.

Yeah, I was thinking that but really wasn't too sure. I have 1 7/8" LT's on it now. The Ultra-Flo certainly isn't the deepest on the block but I thought tips could be a cheap way out. I should of known better!

It's not just the tips, it's the whole 2.5" tail pipe setup that the tips are using. The larger the pipe, the deeper the exhaust note. BUT, if you've got areas of the system that are small in diameter, you are going to lessen the effect of the larger pipe (not just in sound but in flow as well). Go to a 3" I-pipe and get a 3" in dual 3" out muffler. Use 3" tail pipes and 3" or bigger tips. It will be much deeper.

tips definately make a difference...
mine sounded so much better when I went from stock tips to 3" round tips....
Its just like speakers...the shape and size of the ports directly effects the sound....
just take your mouth and say ooooooooo(small opening)...then open your mouth(while still trying to say oooooooo)....hear a difference???
YES!!

You can get Monza tips and change the tune, tips do affect sound tuning.

I had Megs cone shaped tips on mine and they were definitely louder than the straight tips - the megaphone or speaker effect makes a difference.
