Default Help! Safe method to raise car for header install

Going to try installing my headers. I know the car has to be raised pretty high to do the install. What is a safe method to do this? I have seen a couple of pictures that looked VERY unsafe. Such as 4 x 4's under and on top of the jack stands. Don't want to get killed! Thank you

Jackstands are high enough. Get truck ones, they are a bit taller.

Yeah, texas99z28 and I really want to try and tackle this stuff ourselves to save money. As by the time you buy all the equipment, pay for labor, and a tune, it gets expensive quick.

Our main concern as he stated is safety. So far getting some ramps to back onto sounds like a good idea. Is there a write up on tech on the procedure? I have a very good idea on how everything comes apart, but always nice what to know loosen or what not before putting the car up.

You need to remove the dip stick, plugs & wires from the top as well as the manifold bolts. You pretty much need to work from under the hood to under tha car and back again then bakc under. You get the picture. Don't put it up high enough where you can't work under the hood.

well most of us will remove plugs and wires while headers are out since we have enough miles for it to be replaced....but you dont HAVE to....when i get my long tubes on i'll be doing some NGK TR55s and a set of wires prob MSD but not sure....need to look around for what brand wires to use...

but to the op......jacks and wood up front work and the ramps for the rear help a ton....

Go to Menards and get two sets of 6 Ton Jack Stands. One set to put under the rear axle housings, and the other set under the frame rails toward the front of the car. If you would like to see take a look at this video at youtube.com:

He will be able to order his headers long before I will, so have to wait and see if he orders them soon, and if he does whether or not he wants to try and tackle it.

Do you think these would be high enough to do a header install?

Without a doubt replace the plugs at a cost of less than $20. Be prepared to ruin a plug wire or two if the plugs have never been removed. So have a few spare plug wires handy.

Lastly - DON'T reinstall the plugs without putting anti-seize on each plug.

If you use 6 ton jackstands, you'll be able to get it high enough. 3 ton stands aren't tall enough. You'll have to use some blocks of wood on the floor jack to jack it high enough and jacking on the k member is the way to go.

I liked the idea of the ramps better, as I am not to confident in jacking the car that high up. Jacking on the K-Member is just to get the front end higher correct? I'm not to familiar with stuff under the car =p As in bracing and suspension. Just basic knowledge in this area of the car..

I did my with a pair of ramps in the back some stands in the front but had the jack with lots of wood to jack it up when need. Then had the stands so i can keep it high enough the ground to be able to work on the car and it made jacking up the car alot easier.

ohhh if it makes you feel any safer, try shaking the car a little ( i mean a little) when its jacked up and if it looks unsafe then redo it but keep the stand in place as a safety precaution when the car is jack up 4ft in the air. I worked for me and It was pretty safe. Im still here!!!HAHAHA

When the headers were done on my car, only the front was jacked up... so idk if you need to raise the back of the car too.

This is true but just to play it safe its better to just have on ramps in the back your not wasting anytime in do so. You'll waste more time having to jack it up from the back later when your install the header and dont have any room.

I was gonna say - I've only got 35k on the car, so I figure the stocks are good for a bit more still
