Default Mufflers right after the header

Is there any disadvantage to running the mufflers right after the headers (bullet mufflers) and then running the pipes to dump before the axles?

ground clearance

not much room behind the drivers side header collector.

id like to know also. ive been tossing around the same idea. i was thinking of borla XR1 muffler right off my pacesetters.. has anybody tried it? any performance gains by doing that instead of going with an off road y into a catback?

I've always heard it's best to put the mufflers as far back in the exhaust system as possible..which is where all the car manufacturers put them so I guess it's true..prob meaning chambered mufflers though...

depending on the power output of the car....a ypipe and catback is more restrictive.

especially when you consider all the exhuast is going through ONE muffler as compared to TWO on a true duals setup.

for dealing with noise, interior resonance, and ground clearance...do an X or H pipe and then the mufflers.

lol good luck with that. I thought the same thing until I purchased and received the XR-1... the thing is HUGE. No way it will fit behind the collector on the drivers side. The passenger side however, it will fit behind.

Default further back the better

The exhaust gasses cool as they go back so there is more power to be had as there is less restriction till later. Whether it is a very measureable amount I couldn't say. Plus , as the others said, better ground clearance & placement.
