99-02 stock long block. how big of a cam?
havent been in the tech sections in awhile so if there is a thread already post the link, if not, then here is my question.
how big of a cam(i'm talking huge!) can you go in a stock long block and what all parts are needed to do so? in a full weight car, what gear and converter(for a 4l60e) for that cam?

i'm just asking questions ahead of time, just in case i decide to do this. i havent done anything yet. not trying to set any records. just wanted to try out a stock long block with nice massive cam.

Texas Speeds Magic Stick 4 or the Thunder Racing TRex. Both are proven performers, pushing the PTV clearance limits of a stock longblock.
A 3600lb+ full weight car will not like a cam that big without lots of additional compression, a converter that stalls at 4000+, and at minimum 3.73s.

ms4 or trex... if you drive it on the street at all my vote goes for ms4.. little easier to tune, thus making for better driveability on average.. i drive mine 50 miles or so a day...
you will need a minimum of a 4000 stall...
if your running 26" tires you might get by with 373s... if your going to run a 28" tire you need 410s hands down..
FWIW i run a 26" tire and 410s..
you need to let the sucker breath! i would recommend a MINIMUM of an untouched FAST 90/90.. ported is better and if you can afford a 92/92 all the much better...
free flowing exhaust..
if your going to choke the cam.. get something smaller.. meaning if all you can afford is an ls6 intake.. you dont need a "massive" cam.. you wont be using everything it has available..

my plan was to get rid of the 408 and go with cam only 346. i have ported 90/90 and 4.11's already. would have to downgrade to 1 3/4 headers from my 1 7/8 stepped 2" headers. i dont daily drive it so i will prolly go trex. i will still run a 28" tire or go 27". i will have a 100 shot kit also. i just wanna race more folks around my area. i always gotta give somebody the hit or a length. i want something about average and spray it so that i'll still have a ten second ride.
