Default Alternator wire question

What does the small red wire do that is connected to the alternator? Mine has been disconnected from day one when I got the car, but nothing seems to be out of order. So what exactly is it for?

The little red wire is to excite the alternator field (to turn the alt on when you start the car). If yours is hanging and has been that way since you bought the car someone must have converted the car to a 1 wire alt, or it would not have been charging.
