Has anyone ever cut off the EGR tube on top of the sheet metal exhaust manifolds to clean them up?

If you cut the tube off, is the manifold flange flat underneath it, or is it a cavity for the tube?

Any cautions in welding the openings up in the header tubes? Are the header tubes stainless or carbon steel?
