Default Starter wont engage but checks out good? What now?

I have a new GM crate motor LS1 in my 67 Firebird and I have a new starter from Carshop here on the board and a Cat SFI flexplate and my starter wont enagage most times. I just fired the car up last night and the starter gear hits the flexplate but will not engage unless I manually turn the motor over slightly to get the flexplate in a better postion. Once it engages it starts fine but I sometimes have to move the motor 4 or 5 times to get it in the right place for the next start. I had the starter checked out at the auto parts store and everything checked out fine. The Cat flexplate is the same one Speed Inc and other vendors sell so I don't think there is an issue with it because others don't seem to have this problem so what could the issue be? Thanks for the help.

Steve
