Thinking of alternatives for true dual
Has anybody ran a 3.5" or 4" custom Y-pipe off of their headers to the same size I-pipe...then down size to the 3" PowerFlo exhaust tube which splits almost immediately over the axle.
or go custom all the way with a similar looking/type exhaust.
So, basically it is going to run 3.5" Y to dual 3" over the axle. Does this seem reasonable?
Anybody try this? Tell me what your thoughts are on this.
BTW this will go on my 02 SS with 408ci motor with 1 7/8 Kooks headers, currently running 3" to a Magnaflow exhaust.

I brought this same setup in a thread a few months ago. I think it is something that is going to have be tried and see if any gains are made in performance. Also see if sound quality changes was my goal with mufflers right before the tips, along with merge after it goes over rear I hate the rasp of the Magnaflow Catback!

I currently have the Magnaflow and a cutout. I will post a sound bite of it later when I am allowed to get in the car...(long story).

I would run a 3in ypipe into a 3in 4out Flowmaster merge into a 4in Mufflex catback. Or whatever catback you might want to run and just use a 4in cutout. A Flowmaster merge is going to scavenge pretty well for a Ypipe setup.

I have thought about buying a cheap loudmouth used, and taking out the I-pipe resonator and replacing it with a 4" cutout, and then putting 2 magnaflow mufflers in the rear, like in that Powerflow setup, but put turndowns on the muffler, as I'm just not a big fan on tips on a Camaro.
Should be plenty quiet, and sound great.
As far as the Y, 3 or 3.5 to a flowmaster Y merge, coming out to 4" and 4" cutout should give you all the loudness you will need with the cutout open. Is that the setup that you already had in mind?
I'm not sure of the 3.5 Y would hang to low or not. Most seem to stick with a 3" setup. Good luck.

The problem is that you need to:
1. Run the exhaust out the back
2. You will have to get as big of mufflers as you can fit in there to quiet things down.
My duals go all the way out the back, but since they use Magnaflow bullets, it is still pretty damn loud. My wife will definitely ride with me no problems, but my engine is still stock internals. That might change down the road when it's time to upgrade.

My wife won't ride in the car with me if I dump before the axle...she said W8s SS was too loud while I was car sitting for him. Mine has more compression, bigger cam, bigger headers...will probably be louder.

Got any pics of the underside of your car? I have some big suspension parts under my car...UMI TA, DS safety loop are heavy duty and take up a lot of room under the car. I am not sure there is enough room for duals. The car is lowered and exhaust shop said they can't get the pipes over the axle but I am not sure how I feel about under the axle.

fix the exhaust you want and buy a 400-600$ used car for the wifey rides LOL ... really.
or true 3" duals over the axle set up with quite restrictive mufflers (in the middle if cheaper) and dual electric cut-outs
oh and go ask other shops if the one you asked said no
many pictures in the external gen III true duals sticky over and under the axle
