Default LS1 Water Pump Rebuild Kit

There was a question about this 5 years ago, so I wanted to resurrect it. With all the water pump failures on these engines I would think there is a rebuild kit out there somewhere. I've searched everywhere I can think of and have not found anything. Has anyone around here heard of a company making rebuild kits for LS1 water pumps. A $20 kit would sure beat a $140 remanufactured WP.

I've never seen a rebuild kit for LS water pumps. I've only seen them for older Chevy water pumps.

Well if you get a remanufactured waterpump from say autozone (where i got mine and no problems for four years now) you get a lifetime warranty on it so you buy once and done.

the water pump gaskets fail more than the pumps, people just assume its the pump when it is acutally the gaskets leaking.

yea best way to tell is just start it up and let it warm up, then if it starts spewing coolant from the bottom then its the weap hole telling you the pump is bad, and if its coming from other places its the gasket.

I know the water pump is bad (squeeling bearing), but I was looking to rebuild it myself than pay someone to do it. It sounds like no one has seen rebuild kits for these.

Yes I would like to find a kit also. I'm tired of giving my money to China! I remember a day when a MECHANIC, not a parts changer could rebuild just about anything. It's a sad day.

Check rockauto.com ACDELCO Part # 1575247
It says it is a water pump repair kit. I just bought a new acdelco water pump off this website for my hawk. The bearings started squeaking really bad and leaking coolant out of the weep hole. It was $200 (which is almost half a dealers price), but I figure you get what you pay for. Autozone might have a lifetime warranty, but who wants to replace their water pump every year? My time is worth more than that.

you can get a brand new LS2 pump and gaskets for $100......if you ask me would not make sense for a rebuild kit when a brand new(not refurb) pump kit is only $100

For those with mechanical aptitude, you could dismantle the pump, and buy the bearings, mechanical seal gaskets and oring separately from suitable suppliers.

Hello Graham and welcome to LS1tech!

Could you share with us what suitable suppliers have these parts?

Hi Paul,

you should be able to get the bearings from any bearing distributor. SKF etc. and google mechanical seal suppliers in your area.

I found this company http://www.sealdistributors.com/prod...ls/?term_id=14

if you download their catalogue and find their Type B seal. that is the type of seal that is commonly used in automotive water pumps.

you would need to provided the supplier with any identifying bearing numbers.
And with the mech seal they will need to know the housing diameter the pressed steel housing is removed from. and the shaft diameter for the rotary seal face

Photographs are always a good idea for seal identification.

cheers

Graham

OK, so we don't know what any of the part numbers are or a kit that'll include everything needed.

In South Florida, we have Dixie Bearing and Florida Bearing supply houses with counters you can walk up to & they will match any bearing in the world. These bearing places also sell every seal made as well, as they always go hand in hand. On the rare occasion they don't have it, they can order it in quickly. I also was interested in this years back, but eventually went with a new part replacement pump. I was going crazy trying to find a cold start-up squeal that got my neighbors attention(and mine) every time I left the neighborhood, lol. Could not track it down. Eventually, one part at a time, I replaced the idler pulley, tensioner pulley, the belt, P.S. pulley, water pump & then finally...the power-steering pump itself. Checked belt alignment about ten times. Squeal was still there! I finally discovered that the power-steering pulley was slipping on the power-steering pump shaft itself. Removed the pulley, Loctited it, and re-installed it, and the squeal was gone!!! What a huge waste of time and money, but, I finally won the contest, lol. Anyways, another item I was interested in researching for our water pumps back then, was mounting studs,(I come from the high performance boat/marine/engine business) instead of the usual GM mounting bolts. No one offered them. Came to the conclusion that I would simply have to fabricate my own from long stainless bolts, cut the heads off, and rethread them as needed. Hope this can help anyone looking for a squeek that is driving them crazy.
