Default Question about my fan settings/ should I get a 160 t-stat

I got my car tuned last August and the tuner set my fan settings as : Stage1: on@180*, off@ 170* Stage2: on@190*, off@ 180*. He said he did this so he could run more timing. Right now I still have my stock thermostat and my first fan comes on very soon and usually stays running the entire time im driving. The second fan comes on very frequently too. I know a 160* thermostat will fix this but I have been reading and researching and my question is should i just keep everything the way it is now and accept that the fans will be running A LOT, or should I get a 160* t-stat? Also, if I go with the 160, are the fans set correctly and will it be bad/harmful to run the engine this "cool"?

Thanks

I have a Meziere EWP re used it on my 402 build with a 160 stat. Similar fan program as you. My fans rarely come on except when I am running for extended high speed runs, or the temps are up. I saw the 170's a few times today sitting in stop and go traffic. Fans never kicked on. Temp fell to 163-165 as soon as we started moving.

Hope this helps, I say get a 160 stat. Fans will only come on to maintain the engine temps when stopped, the stat will keep everything happy while air is moving over the rad. Good luck.

ok thanks guys. I plan on putting a 160 in. You dont think the engine could be harmed by running "too cool" though with a 160 and these fan settings though? Just want to be sure.

there is no reason to have your fans come on that early when running the stock thermostat. i would almost think about finding a new tuner for setting your fans to come on that low because your stock thermostat doesn't open until much after that. in my opinion, there is no reason to run a 160 in most situations. you do not want it to open to early in cold weather. everyone has their own opinion but i would prefer my coolant temps be around 190 or so.

That certainly is true on a stock ls1. I remember getting scared when the temps were up to 240 !! I only saw one fan on, and then suddenly the second fan came on. Temps dropped fast.

Now my question is, what about highly modified 346's and strokers. Do they run better hotter? If so y does everyone tune them to run cooler?

I wouldn't consider my LS1 to be highly modified so I think I'm goin to put a 180 stat in it and tune the fans to come on later. This way its a little cooler but still is warm enough for a stock LS1.

I have a 160 and fans set to turn on early like that. My car runs very cool. Yes it does run a little stronger when it heats up, but that is when the block/heads etc. heat up, but my water temp stays nice and cool, relatively speaking. I have a 98 so the first dash on my temp gauge is 160. when driving the needle sits on the 0 of where it says 160.

thanks for the input fellas. i talked with my tuner today and I've decided to put in a 180* stat in and raise the fan temps to

Fan 1 on/off at: 194°F/185°F
Fan 2 on/off at: 204°F/195°F

hopefully this will solve the problem.

If I was doing it again I would probably go with the 180 as well.

I have a 160 T-stat in my LS1. I also have a switch panel where I have manual control of my fans and so does the computer.

With that being said

Low fan turns on at 190º and shuts off at 180º
High fan turns on at 220º and shuts off at 210º

I also have a FTRA set up, my car runs a little warmer. I also have a water temp gauge too. if I am crusing my car runs around 185º-190º so my low fan is pretty always on, except in cooler weather.

My High fans come on when either I am in slow moving traffic or shot fast runs (track for instance)

The hottest I've ver seen my car was ~220º

Its annoying that my low fan is ALWAYS on b/c my LED is sooooo god damn bright I need to put a resistir in there to dim it down
