Default thermostat question!

This may be a dumb question but i have to ask.... I have heard and read so many diff things about cooler thermostats vs stock. Is it an advantage to a 160 thermostat... Do they make more power of cause you to loose power because i read in a article somewhere a ls1 was designed to make max power at 210 degrees> Some one lead me in right direction. THanks abunch

I'm curious about this as well. I remember when I put my car on the dyno the first time the guy running it said my car liked to be warmed up to full temperature because it was making better power the warmer it got

dont forget............just cuz you have a 160 t stat..............does NOT mean the coolant temp WILL be 160......it just opens earlier........and what settings do the fans come on......200-210 ?????

I don't know about you guys but my engine bogs when its hot outside. And runs quick as **** in the cooler evenings. Heat is always bad for the engine.

^ That could most likely be due to the air temp you were taking in. I notice that mine doesn't like the heat either, but these engines were designed to operate at 210*. Hence the term "operating temperature." And yes, the stat opens at 160, but it doesn't meant the coolant will be that cool. If the engine does not get warm enough, to condensation and moisture in the oil cannot evaporate. This is where the condensation comes from on the oil cap on some cars.

The stocker should be around 180*. My 160* has the fans set to come on at 180*.
