Default No start after changing steering column

I am building a road race car so I needed to remove the steering lock, we had an old column laying around so we gutted it, the problem's started, I think, when I was swapping it out I touched the back of the fuse box and various smoke and a few pops ensued. Got the new column in and the fuel pump cycles but no turn over? We checked all the obvious stuff fuse panels relays, swapped a few around and nothing! I even put the old column back in and nothing? Please help!
