Default Manufactured Y-pipe vs. Muffler shop Y-pipe

I know most people buy a Y-pipe to match-up with their headers. But I wanna know what advantage these "store bought" Y-pipes had over simply letting a muffler shop weld up some normal split exhaust pipes? I've just never heard anyone compare the two!

Thanks!

If a muffler shop can make you a mandrel bent one in a good quality material then go that route. Store bought are good, but one made for your car will always fit better.

for what a flowmaster y merge costs nowadays just get one of those and have a exhaust shop bend some 3 inch pipe on your car so its got good fit and great flow for pretty cheap.

Some "manufactured" Y-pipes suck *** for merge. You'd
have to try pretty hard to make a crappier one than I saw
inside the old-version TSP (I'm talking about 1/2" worth of
pipe end sticking into the other side; turbulence, you figure?)
and my Jet-Hot Ywas not much better (only 1/4" or so). A
decent merge is there on others, and you can buy the merge
piece if you must have it fabbed local.

I'd say hang out and look for a used Y that looks good at the
merge and has a reputation for fitting up nice (big thumbs
down on the Jet-Hot, for that).

I second that on the old TSP design. I had the catted one with gutted cats installed on my car with a LM2 and the rasp got even worse. Went back to pacesetter ORY the rasp went down(not completely) car ran a little better too. My car is cammed so any change in the exhaust is easily felt by the car acting up at idle and part throttle.
