Default Improve mpg 2000 chevy suburban?

My parents gave me their 210,000 mile suburban to bring to haul to school with all my junk. Its 400 miles each way and I make the trip 2-3 times a year. What are cheap/easy mods to get better gas mileage? I've convinced them to get a cold air intake and a better filter but the rest will come out of my pocket. Would porting the TB and intake give that much of a difference? Right now its sitting at 13mpg and I'd really like to get it up a few notches to potentially 15-16mpg.

change the spark plugs, new air filter, air the tires up to 35 psi.Might want to have the O2 sensors checked out, scan for codes.

Freer flowing exhaust, fresh plugs, 02's, proper wheel and tire size/psi, gearing and weight removal. you could get an optimal computer tune, but would never recoup the cost in improved mileage. Porting the TB probably won't do much. Weight and aerodynamics are your enemy. You're screwed.

Is there a way I could get my hands on a very cheap exhuast that flows better? Would a junk yard have something like that and I'm guessing I'd need new cats with that also? Would porting the cylinder heads improve gas mileage since I need to practice on a bad set anyway? Would also raising the compression with a thinner gasket work (what else would need to be changed with a new gasket)?

Generally speaking, anything serious change to the vehicle that you make in search of MPG won't pay for itself for TENS OF THOUSANDS of miles worth of fuel savings...if you're looking at major mods solely for MPG, you should instead look at the value of the vehicle, and what you can replace it with.

Give it a tune up and make sure everything is working properly, 13mpg with a LM7 is awful

Our lifted crew cab 2500 with a 6.0/4L80E gets 17-20 mpg on the highway though 4.56 gears

Thumbs down

Yep...sell it and get a used Honda or Toyota. Why in the heck does one student need a Suburban to go back and forth for anyway? You really got that much stuff to haul? I doubt it.
