Default Bassani Catback - Is It REALLY 50 State Legal?

Come on in to find out the dB test results...
This is what Bassani says:

This is what the state of CA says, tested on a stock 01 motor car with the only intake/exhaust mods being a 98+ WS6 lower airbox, drop-in K&N filter, descreened MAF, and the Bassani True Dual X-Pipe catback:

My guess is that they were referring to meeting CARB criteria, something cat backs do by nature of being CAT back! As far as noise, though, it appears that this system is NOT legal by the db level! Need to talk to Bassani @ this prior to purchase?

There's really nothing you can accomplish by talking to Bassani. I'm sure they don't want to post on their product page a warning that it will probably not meet state dB requirements, as I'm sure they have a hard enough time selling them already.

The BAR referee had a good rule of thumb: if it sounds good, then it's probably illegal.

The Bassani sounds good. I think it's wonderful. The referee felt the same way. Just gotta put on some stock looking tips to draw less attention to it, after sorting out this dB issue.

The only F-bodies I know of that can legally get away with having a loud exhaust is a Camaro SS/Firehawk that was originally purchased with a Loudmouth exhaust.

Is anything legal in CA? Not to beat the long-dead horse, but it seems like anything that's not an OEM part is illegal out there.

I doubt Bassani meant their system met decibel requirements, as that varies from county to county even within the same state, and is very "open to interpretation" by local cops.

Can you stuff steel wool to lessen the dB level of the exhaust in Nazifornia? I know in Germany, all the US cars with loud exhaust don't pass unless the owner stuff the exhaust w/ wool.

Most companies will have a CARB number on products that are 50-state legal. If they say that it's 50 state legal and they can't provide that then it would seem to be false advertising. If you're happy with the product there are ways to reduce the decibel level without removing the exhaust.

Ok, so 50 state legal does not refer to carb (no CAT BACK changes CARB status), and it is NOT legal according to the OP's post, so what did the rep @ Bassani say the "50 state legal" in the ad is referring to? What is this, stump the stars?

Wow that's messed up. Maybe they mean it's legal to own the cat-back in all 50 states, but not necessarily legal once you put it on your car. LOL

IF you would read it closely, and read it for what it is, you would understand that they said it is emissions legal, not decibel legal.... pretty sure emissions refers to the amount of pollution in the air not the sound level of the engine/exhaust.. thats how i read it at least, OR we could ask Wikipedia. . Emission standards are requirements that set specific limits to the amount of pollutants that can be released into the environment. peace

What they referred to being 50 state Emission Legal is that their exhaust does not emit a higher number of pollutants than what is said to be legal by the federal government and the states we live in, If anyone is weird around here it would be you pewter2002, with you guessing what the definition of 50 state legal is with your 5th grade education....

Actually, Red Z-29, the reason for the parantheses in my response, IF you can comprehend, is that I was being sarcastic! Read again, my friend, your quick draw on the keyboard has shown WHO is really lacking intellectually! Notice the guy I was calling out actually had the sense to interpret what I meant and left it as is! Granted, some of the responses on this site require one to have the capacity to interpret responses or comments, in seriousness or jest, on MORE THAN ONE INELLECTUAL LEVEL (somewhat above grade 5 level, perhaps?). The fact that you restate the blatant obvious facts, already alluded to by ME, illustrates how it is in fact YOU, who is struggling here, not who YOU think! Have a good one!

Throw some noise cones in the pipes to dampen it for the inspection.

I wish California would fall off in the ocean. That place is a disaster on wheels.
