Default My new LS1... cracked block...

Well. I had my new exhaust mounted today at a really decent shop here in Toronto.

They guy doing the install pointed out a nice crack in the block... didn't say it was a fatal crack - but that I need to have it looked at immediately.

So I took some photo's for all to see!

Fabulous eh?

I have put about 20kms on the car since I bought it.

The previous owner advised he put Z06 heads / Cam in it...

Look's to me like he cracked the block in the process.

How nice..

Maybe he left some coolant in the bolt holes. I have heard this can cause cracks when tightening down the new bolts.

^ Dang it.. beat me to it.. Had this typed up already but my cousin showed up. I was thinking from a water pump install.

I have never seen a cracked LS block..

Maybe hydraulic's from fluid in the bolt holes when they assembled it.

first thing i noticed was the MLS head gaskets. previous owner had to have left some coolant in the bolt holes. does it use any coolant? as long as nothing is getting in the engine oil i wouldnt worry about it, but it would be a good excuse to build a 4xxci motor.

Well, I haven't owned it long enough to know...

The oil was old - but perfect when I changed it out.
The coolant was also good - but I changed that too.

I am going to take it to a shop on Monday to have it looked over.
I just wish I had noticed it before I bought it, as funds for a new engine / block aren't in the immediate future.

seems like an odd place to crack. Does the crack leak anything at all? Like said before as long as oil and coolant arnt interchanging locations i bet it would be fine... but you should take steps to keep the crack from spreading anymore

Well, as far I can tell everything is in order engine / coolant wise.

I will see what the shop recommends as a "fix" if it's even fixable.

Kinda took the joy out of my new purchase...

^ I'll say.. Normally there's not much "Fixable" about a cracked block, other than to take it to a machine shop to see if they can possibly have it TIG welded, provided it won't effect anything else on the engine. But a crack is a strength issue with the block.

Thats too bad, hate finding nasty surprises when I just bought the car. Have a question what headers are those? did the shop just put them on? how you like them?

Yeah. The shop is noise boyz.

They did a full exhaust (arh racing headers, catted y-pipe, magnaflow catback). Great set up.

They seem to know what they are doing! They are the ones who pointed out the crack to me as well - which I appreciated.

if its not leaking coolant from the "crack" then I wouldnt worry about it. You would know if it was in the oil, as the oil would be milky.

I feel the same as others, if no lquids contaminate one another then I wouldnt worry so much. Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesnt probagate.

You should be more than good to start saving the cash for another motor build or post up in the "For Sale" items and see if anyone has a used "NON CRACKED" block they would sell for cheap. I have seen them on here and other places for less than a couple hundred bucks. Thats a great place to start a hot motor build and in a couple of years get a badd **** motor sit'n in under the hood!

Good luck!

Chad
