Cam installs usually range in between $400-800 depending on the shop.
Clutch installs are in the $200-300 range depending on the shop.

quoted 6.7 hours @ $90.00 per hour for clutch and tick master total $603.00

and 8.7 hours for cam and associated parts total $783 from a well know shop in FL.

I guess I need to get another quote to see how it compares.

They're probably quoting you book time.

It does not take almost 7 hrs to do a clutch and master in an F-body.

That's all any shop is going to do is charge book time. Think about it. It might call for 7 hours and the tech gets it done is 5. Does that mean he should only get paid for 5? If that were the case...Me being an automotive tech would stretch it out to 10 and get paid for 10 hours.

Products like Mitchell, OnDemand, AllData are there for industry wide labor times....otherwise I would make a weekly paycheck out one tune up a day.

That is why dealerships are so expensive, they charge book time, and a proficient performance shop has these things down to a better system, allowing them to charge a lower rate for the installs and keep people coming back because of great prices. But this is also why a dealership tech can make a good salary, if he can cut his actual time down, then he makes book time and get's it done alot quicker. We have a large Pontiac dealrship by my house(top 5 in nation) that most of it's service tech's are making 6 figures.

Book time is necessary for general maintenance and repair. Performance work are usually flat fee's.
